About the Studio

In our 2500 square foot showroom we have several floor models of our Rio Grande® looms. On these looms we hand weave a variety of contemporary rugs, blankets, and pillows. We have certain designs that we reproduce on a custom basis with colors and sizes to suit your taste. Each design can be ordered in either blanket weight or rug weight.

The rugs and blankets are weft face (flat) weaving, usually with tapestry designs with a contemporary southwest look. The wool yarns are hand-dyed with the best synthetic dyes chosen for their color fastness. The warp is a very strong wool worsted warp. We have several expert weavers who all apprenticed under Rachel Brown. The quality of these weavings is exceptional.

Blankets are woven of a fine Merino wool yarn...very soft to the touch... The blankets are very flexible and light. They weigh approximately 3 ounces per square foot. The fringe is hand tied.

Rugs are woven of a long staple, lustrous 100% virgin wool mix which we have custom spun for us. This is a coarser, thicker yarn which we pack in tightly to form a heavy, stiff rug. They weight approximately 6 ounces per square foot. The fringe is a braided fringe which secures the warp against wear.

Since we dye all of our own yarns, you have about 80 colors to choose from. All the yarns have slight variations in the colors, which gives a luminous depth to the weaving.

Blankets and rugs are available in 3 standard approximate widths: 44", 52", and 58". Any length is possible, but must be over 53". You will be charged for the actual square footage of your completed weaving.

To start the process of a custom weaving, you need to contact us and tell us what you have in mind. We can send you samples of colors and yarns. Usually there will be an 4 to 6 week delivery time after colors, design, size, and price have been determined. We require a down payment of 50% of the price, and the remainder plus shipping upon completion.

Weaving Southwest also represents Rug Designers who can do custom weaving for you, Fred Black, Pat Dozier, Alex George Sullivan and Connie Enzmann-Forneris.
